Optimus Physiotherapy understands the difficult time in which you and your family may be going through and believes having the right cancer support is key to optimal cancer rehab. We want to ensure you feel reassured and comfortable throughout, from initial enquiry right through assessment and treatment, whether receiving help after cancer or during treatment.
You can make an appointment with Optimus Physiotherapy without a referral from your GP or other Health Professional. Alternatively discuss your needs with your GP who may be able to refer you.
At this time we currently do not accept referrals directly from Insurance Companies.
Before making a face to face appointment Optimus Physiotherapy will offer you a short telephone consultation to discuss your suitability for our services.
If appropriate and you wish to go ahead with arranging a visit from Optimus Physiotherapy you will receive some forms to complete and an information sheet. These forms ask for a history of your diagnosis and any other medical conditions. They will also ask you a little bit about what your concerns are and what you want to get out of having physiotherapy.
It is important that these forms are completed as accurately and as fully as possible in order for assessment and treatment to be appropriate and safe for you. In some cases it might be helpful for you to ask your Consultant or GP for details you may not be sure about. Optimus Physiotherapy may also ask your permission to contact these Health Professionals on your behalf.
The first appointment will be to complete a full assessment. The information on the forms you have completed with be discussed and you may be asked some additional questions. The 2nd part of the assessment will then be to assess physically the concerns you have.
Once the assessment has been completed goals and a treatment plan will be jointly agreed.
An assessment appointment will usually take approximately 1 hour.
If appropriate and time allows treatment will start at your first assessment appointment. This may be in the form of advice and recommendations or may be some exercises to get you started.
A course of ongoing treatment will then be discussed on an individual basis.
Equipment or mobility aids recommended by Optimus Physiotherapy will have to be purchased privately unless otherwise discussed. Optimus Physiotherapy will be able to provide advice about where and how to purchase these items.
Optimus Physiotherapy will need your consent before an assessment or treatment can commence.
If at any time you feel that you do not want to continue you have the right to withdraw your consent. If you withdraw your consent during assessment or treatment the therapist will stop immediately.
Please note that physical touching and positioning of the body is likely to be needed in order to assess and provide treatment, which may mean that your are asked to remove some clothing. For example if your breast and shoulder area is being assessed you may be asked to remove your top and bra. Please let the physiotherapist know if you are not comfortable with this.
In the case of pelvic floor issues an internal vaginal examination may be recommended. This will only be done with your full consent, in which a separate consent form will need to be signed. A full explanation on what to expect will be given prior to you giving your consent.
You will not be expected to remove any clothing if you are having a video consultation.
All clients of Optimus Physiotherapy are entitled to a chaperone for any part of their assessment or treatment. If this is something you require please discuss with Optimus Physiotherapy.
You are welcome to have a family member or friend with you during your appointment but please note this is not considered a 'formal' chaperone.
Acupuncture is very safe and is beneficial in treating a range of different conditions. It uses single-use, sterilised needles that pierce the skin at specific points. The locations of these specific points are determined through an assessment by Optimus Physiotherapy. Needles are left in position for 20 - 30 minutes before removal and disposal. Experiencing a tingle or dull ache is called 'de qi' and can be an indicator that the body is responding to the acupuncture.
Some people experience rapid improvement in their condition with only a few sessions while others take longer to respond. Like most medical treatment though there are no guarantees that it will be of benefit to you.
